Faculty of Da’wah and Communication at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Promotes AI Literacy to Support Teaching and Research

Tuesday, July 15, 2025,  Yogyakarta — The Faculty of Da’wah and Communication at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga reaffirmed its commitment to educational transformation in the digital era by organizing an Academic Writing workshop titled "Training on the Use of AI for Teaching and Research". The event, held at the Faculty of Medicine, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, was met with great enthusiasm from faculty members who actively engaged in hands-on sessions guided by expert speakers.

In his opening remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Da’wah and Communication, Dr. Arif Maftukhin, emphasized that digital literacy—particularly in artificial intelligence (AI)—is essential in today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape. “We can use AI to enhance the quality of classroom learning and improve research proposals, as its integration has become a necessity in this era,” he said. He also underscored the importance of using AI responsibly, stressing that users must remain in control of the technology.

The training served as a tangible step in equipping lecturers with the skills necessary to adopt emerging technologies that enhance both teaching and research in line with current developments.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Wahyono, S.Kom., a lecturer from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), explained that AI can be utilized within certain limits, especially in education. The potential applications of AI include adaptive and personalized learning systems, roles as chatbots and virtual assistants, data analysis and assessment, and integration into virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) environments.

Dr. Wahyono also introduced several AI tools particularly useful for academic research. Tools such as ResearchRabbit help in mapping research landscapes, identifying research gaps, and analyzing interconnections across studies. Elicit assists in summarizing and reviewing literature, and comparing articles in tabular format. Scite.ai is valuable for finding the latest citations on specific topics and evaluating the scientific credibility of publications. ChatGPT can be used for data analysis, interpreting experimental results, and translation needs. Additionally, Grammarly and Quillbot are recommended for refining grammar, spelling, and academic writing style in English.

While highlighting the benefits, Dr. Wahyono also advised participants to be mindful of several factors before adopting AI tools, such as licensing and subscription costs, internet connectivity, intellectual property rights, user interface accessibility, and the specific purpose of AI usage.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of key principles in AI usage—fairness, explainability, robustness, transparency, and data privacy—to ensure ethical and responsible application in academic contexts.

This initiative marks a strategic step in strengthening digital competencies among educators and researchers at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, as the institution continues to align itself with global educational advancements.
